In Pain? Try running a Marathon...

I was training for a marathon when my dentist told me that the wisdom teeth had to come out. I wanted to postpone it until after my race, but he discouraged that. At 34, I was told that it would be worse the longer I waited. So, I conceded and had it done in the middle of my training program, thinking I might only lose a day or two.

I was out of work (and the gym) for a week. As stubborn as I am, I decided not to let this nerve damage change my plans. Continuing to train for my marathon gave me something else to focus on.

Six days after my surgery, I ran 12 miles – at that time, my farthest run. On the message board that I visit frequently (see Links on the right) someone left a post about stress relief and recovery enhancement from exercise. They also cautioned not to overdo it. Regardless, I kept training to run 26 miles and 385 yards. My surgery was March 13, I was fully recovered in seven weeks, and my marathon is on June 4. Do what works for you!
